FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

With the Fair American no longer available, which of the other three practicums would be suitable for a beginner scratch-builder?

Quite obviously not the HMS Warrior (74) as depicted in this photo. This really leaves the USF Confederacy (36) as the only entry level subject since the HMY Fubbs is more difficult. Since the Warrior practicum involves a four book series, covering every conceivable item, many ship modelers order the Warrior practicum but begin construction on the Confederacy. In other words, they cross reference both practicums and see another perspective in the Warrior practicum which could be applied to the Confederacy. From the feed back received, many modelers also order the Fubbs book simply for cross reference and for the beauty of the book.

Will I fail or 'burn out?'
If you are willing to read and proceed in the recommended systematic approach as well as concentrating not on the entire project but only on the lesson at hand, they you will succeed in constructing a beautiful ship. One nice feature of the practicum method, you can always count on the ongoing support of the author by telephoning, sending e-mails or writing to him with your questions and concerns. There are also available photo sets of the Confederacy and Fubbs practicums. Modelers find these photo sets quite helpful because the 4 x 6 photos are in color and show the detail of the practicum model.
What is the cost of the various practicums, and where can I order them?
The Confederacy practicum (nearly 1,000 pages) sells for $135 plus $14 for priority shipping within the U.S. Since the shipping rate differs greatly for overseas orders, it is best to inquiry from the author such costs. Some examples which can be given are as follow: to Canada, $27; air mail to England and the Netherlands, $37; to Japan, $60; to Australia, $56. The Confederacy practicum can only be ordered directly from the author: The (39) color photo set sells for $40. Only bank checks drawn on a US bank and in US $’s or International money orders in US $’s are accepted. For those who simply can only use a credit card, please inquiry from the author on how this may be arranged.
